GUEST POST

Rachael

So the prospectus has arrived in the post, you’ve had a good read and like what you see… the next stage is to go to an Open Day! I was quite nervous when I attended my first one, as I didn’t know what to expect! The key thing is to get as much information as possible and ask lots of questions.

Here are some useful hints and tips I would advise to any prospective student who is planning to come to an Open Day:

1. Don’t miss the important talks

Talks

You’ll learn lots in the talks – so don’t miss them!

I don’t want to nag… but make sure you arrive at the open day on time! The course talks are very useful as each talk is specific to a degree programme – it’s a great opportunity to meet others that are interested in the same degree as you too. Other talks such as the finance and accommodation talks gives in-depth advice to both student and parents.

2. Talk to the ambassadors

Ambassador

Look out for us in the blue t-shirts!

You can ask us any question, no matter how stupid it may sound! We are all students who are currently studying at Cardiff Met, so we have lots of useful tips that you might not find on a website. From nightlife to making cheap meals, we may have an answer to your query!

3. Check out the halls

Halls

Plas Gwyn Halls – this is where I lived in my first year.

If you’re planning to move to Cardiff whilst studying at Cardiff Met, then Halls may be the option for you. It’s good to see the rooms and facilities in person before you actually move in. It’s also a great way to know exactly how much space you’re dealing with and how much stuff to bring…don’t do what I did and pack everything including the kitchen sink!

4. Make the most of the Information Fair

info fair

The information fair is really useful – make the most of it!

The information fair is made up of lecturers representing the various degree courses at that campus, plus stall from people like accommodation, finance and student services. It’s a good opportunity to chat 1:1 to the lecturers and ask any questions that might not have been answered during the course talks.

5. Explore the city

Cardiff

Cardiff is a gorgeous city – make the most of it while you’re here!

Try to put some time aside to explore the capital. Cardiff is such a unique and thriving city – you’ll be a fool not to explore it! There are some beautiful parks like Bute Park and Roath Lake for you to roam around; both are in a walking distance from Llandaff and Cynoced campuses.
