I started university as a person who didn’t like any sports, but I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and join a club. Fast forward almost a year and joining the Weightlifting Club has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

It can be very daunting turning up to a new club, especially when you have no experience of the sport you want to start. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming though, and I knew almost immediately that I’d joined the right club.

The team! This is our final pic from before the summer of 2017.

Starting something that’s completely new to you is a brilliant experience and I’ve learnt so much. Now you can barely keep me away from a gym! In all honestly Cardiff Met Weightlifting Club is sometimes what keeps me going at university. It’s like a family and I hate it when I have to miss a training session. It’s been great having friends away from my uni course and having other people to socialise with.

With the 2016/17 club president in Twickenham about to watch 2 of our members compete!

Each year there are opportunities to compete, but there’s no pressure to at all – some of us lift for fun and some of us lift competitively. As long as we all enjoy what we’re doing then we’re happy. I actually went and watched 2 of our members compete at the student championships in Twickenham and it was brilliant – who knows, maybe I’ll compete at some point during my time at Cardiff Met!

Waiting for our lifters to compete at the university championships…

I’m not the kind of student who likes going out drinking a lot, but it surprised me how much I enjoy the socials we have. This past year there’s been a pyjama night, drinking games while watching Wales vs England in the Six Nations at the Cyncoed Student Union and a pub golf social.

Love our socials!

I’ve really thrown myself into the weightlifting club – I post on our Instagram page @cardiffmetweightlifting and I’m now the vice president for the club too. I love it and I’m so glad that I joined at the start of my foundation degree. Lucky for me my course is long enough that I might get to have a total of 5 years as part of the club!

If you want to know more about the club or join us (doesn’t matter if you’re a Fresher, half way through your course or a masters student) then drop us a message on Instagram!

Here’s to another 4 years with Cardiff Met Weightlifting!
