Cecilia Tandi

My name is Cecilia Tandi and I work as a Finance Analyst at the FTSE 100 firm Legal & General in Cardiff. I graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance from Cardiff Met.

When I was at Cardiff Met I had several jobs; working as a Student Warden, Student Ambassador and part-time jobs in catering and as a Care Worker. I also volunteered once a week with Tenovus Cancer charity shop.

The multiple jobs that I did whilst studying helped me gain experience whilst meeting new people and building my network. Each of the roles developed my professional experience and built desirable skills. For example, working as a Student Warden in the University Halls of Residence developed my team-working and leadership skills.

There is a large student population in Cardiff so there is no doubt that you will be able to meet new friends and build life-long relationships. Cardiff is a diverse place and has plenty of opportunities; I would highly recommend it as a place to live and study.

I also took part in the Cardiff Met Award initiative that was run by the Students’ Union. With this initiative I completed 100 hours of work experience, attended a mock interview and wrote a reflective report. This initiative demonstrated drive to potential employers and showcased other skills learned outside of studying.

After graduation I took on a voluntary role with Taff Housing Association for six months working in their Finance Department – this was a fantastic learning opportunity for me!

I landed a temporary job role with Legal & General working as an Investment Service Associate for six months. I then started working in the Finance department on a fixed term contract before I was made permanent as a Finance Analyst.

I have since started studying the ACCA professional qualification as I aspire to be an Accountant in future.

Why did I choose to study BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance?
 • I feel it is a good relevant degree that opens doors to a variety of options whether you want to work in practice as an Auditor or in industry as an Accountant
• The BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance puts you in a strong position to achieve the professional qualifications required to become a chartered Accountant
• Every organisation whether big, small or charity requires an Accountant and so there will always be plenty of opportunity

In short, the journey to success will not always be easy – I struggled financially at one point and suffered from illness but I still persevered. It is okay to make mistakes as sometimes the best way to learn is through experience. I am still as determined as ever and look forward to the day when I will qualify as an ACCA Accountant.
