I am Liyetchan Soro, a former student of Cardiff Metropolitan University, who graduated with a BSc in International Accounting & Finance followed by an MSc in Accounting & Finance. I am working full-time as a Collateral Margin Analyst for JP Morgan Chase & Co in the Corporate and Investment Banking Division in the Bournemouth office.

I decided to join Cardiff Met because of its excellent reputation both in and outside the United Kingdom. As an international student, it was essential for me to get my education in a university where I would feel welcome, and I can confirm that this has been the case for me.

After joining for my  BSc, I decided to stay at Cardiff Met for my Postgraduate degree because of many other important factors.

One of them is the quality and relevance of the course content. Throughout my postgraduate year, I  enjoyed the quality of the contents dispensed by lecturers and the seriousness and academic rigour of those  lectures. This motivated me to pursue my studies at Cardiff Met because I could see myself getting better day after day with everything I was learning.

Another reason for staying at Cardiff Metropolitan University is the huge variety of extra-curricular activities. I am passionate about football and playing football is also an important part of my life. Studying at Cardiff Met allowed me to combine both my passion and education by playing for the university football team and training part-time without it having to interfere with my full-time education.

My current role at JP Morgan Chase & Co is purely based on the Financial Market industry. As a Collateral Margin Analyst, I serve as the initial assessor, monitor and controller of collateral and loan activity for the portfolio. Simply explained, it consists of covering my client’s exposure to the financial markets due to trade activities.

My day-to-day tasks will include but not exclusively the following:

  • Calculate, issue, and agree on margin calls with Brokers to mitigate credit risk exposures on behalf of our clients
  • Agree and book collateral trades to satisfy incoming margin calls from Brokers
  • Perform daily reconciliations between systems and the market to ensure accurate records

The best advice I could give to someone thinking about studying Accounting & Finance at Cardiff Met is not to be afraid!  The quality of the course content and the reputation of the University will be a great asset to your education and will help your CV to stand out when you are ready to embrace a professional career, as has been the case for me.
