Sam Cockrell

Attending Cardiff Met whilst running a business has been a great combination for me. Why? I study BA (Hons) Business & Management with HRM and the course gives me fantastic skills and experiences which I can apply to my own business ventures.

I’m Sam Cockrell, a second year student and I run three organisations outside of my studies as well as other commitments including Chairman of committees, political and charitable ambassadorships. I officially started my first business when I was thirteen years old and since have become an award-winning Welsh entrepreneur. Being a student at Cardiff Met whilst running my own business has given me many opportunities such as starting my first society called ‘Venture’, joining committees at the University and becoming a Course Representative.

The skills you develop whilst on the BA (Hons) Business & Management really do make a difference! When I started at Cardiff Met I was already running a business but now it has enabled me to fully understand, from an academic point of view, the importance of how human resources can affect my revenue or marketing can affect what employees I should hire.

My journey through entrepreneurship has led to me being recognised by Her Majesty the Queen, I’ve been a part of the President Bill Clinton scheme, a candidate for the ‘Undergraduate of the Year’ award and BBC One’s ‘The Apprentice’. My most recently launched business is ‘Iguana Design Lab’ which specialises in SMEs in the UK for all things digital media such as web design, app development, marketing and branding.

Throughout my Foundation year until present day, I have found that studying and operating my businesses it has been very successful because I have learned the necessary tools to use in an organisation on a daily basis. Cardiff Met have been supportive and encouraging, I always feel that tutors know what to teach and how to make the course highly relevant to the modern world of business.
