My goals when I started University were; to have fun, make friends and get good grades – so far it’s going great! I am pretty sure that everyone’s goals will be very similar, so I thought I would write something a bit different to the usual ‘student advice’ posts, and instead talk about what not to do when starting University!

1. Don’t bring loads of things you don’t need

At University you won’t need all of your cuddly toys and magazine collections! Be selective with what you pack; you won’t have room for it all in your dorm room. Don’t worry if you forget anything either, as your family can post things to you or you can always go out and get a new one after you move in.

2. Avoid having a messy dorm room

When you first move in to University you need to ensure that you unpack properly and organise your dorm room. You will be looking after yourself from now on – there will be nobody to help you get ready in the morning or help you find your hairbrush! If you have a nice clean dorm room it will be nice for friends to come and stay over too – nobody wants to stay in a smelly dorm room.

3. Don’t spend all of your student loan as soon as you get it

I know far too many students who have made this mistake and have had to get a job or leave University because they didn’t have enough for food or rent. Budget your money, ensure you have enough to pay the bills and buy food and then you can treat yourself.

4. Avoid ‘letting yourself go’

It’s easy to get caught up in the partying lifestyle at university, but don’t forget that you need to look after yourself. During University, you need to make sure you get at least 8 hours sleep a night and to eat well because students do tend to put on a little weight!

Last but not least…

5. Don’t forget to have fun! 🙂
