My Freshers’ Week experience at Cardiff School of Art and Design

My Freshers’ Week was quite unique and something I won’t easily forget! From the CSAD (Cardiff School of Art and Design) welcome talk at the National Museum of Wales, the occasional night out and a course trip to London, this Freshers’ Week had me pumped up ready for the year ahead!

Live Lounge

Live Lounge is a Cardiff Met student staple!

Moving into halls was a smooth transition and I quickly made friends with my flatmates, finding out that I was living with two other course-mates in the process. The day was spent unpacking, doing a basic food shop and getting to know the people I would be spending the rest of the year with (with the help of a visit to Live Lounge)!

Flatmates

My lovely first year flatmates – we got on so well we went on holiday together!

On the Monday morning we all took a shuttle bus to the Cyncoed campus where the Freshers’ Fair was being held in the National Indoor Athletics Centre – a chance to sign up to various societies, learn about events happening around Cardiff as well as winning free pizza!

National Museum

A beautiful place for a welcome talk…

The next day was our CSAD welcome talk in the beautiful Reardon Smith lecture hall at the National Museum of wales. Here we were given our course handbooks and a taster to life as a CSAD student. Afterwards we were split into our courses, introduced to our course tutors and given guided walk back to campus.

WMC

Cardiff Bay in the sunshine!

On Thursday we met as a course at the Craft in the Bay gallery in Cardiff Bay, where we met Ingrid and Pip, two of our course tutors. They showed us round the gallery and talked us through the making process of some of the works on display, all of which were amazing in terms of the skill level required to produce them! Afterwards we had a mini tour of the Bay, which I chose to explore more once everyone had dispersed. Luckily it was a beautiful day in Cardiff, blue sky with not a cloud in sight!

Design festival

Visiting the London Design Fair was a fantastic experience.

My Freshers’ Week concluded with a trip to London for Maker and Ceramics students to the London Design Fair and the V&A museum, expenses paid for. This was a great chance to get to know my course mates a bit more and to gather inspiration for the weeks ahead, the trip to London was definitely a highlight of my Freshers’ Week experience, and not something many people I know could say they did in their first week as a University student!
