Students studying MSc Fashion Marketing Management, BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing Management and BA (Hons) Fashion Buying & Brand Management at Cardiff Met received an email giving us an opportunity to volunteer with the ‘Working Wardrobe’ charity event supporting with model dressing and styling as well modelling and walking the runway. Also, it would present an exciting chance to network and support our industry related modules on the MSc Fashion Marketing Management.

The Working Wardrobe is a new community-based charity initiative that promotes sustainability by distributing new and lightly used interview wear, free of charge, to job-seekers giving those facing financial barriers a much needed boost in their search.

Ahead of the event Fashion Marketing students at Cardiff Met were welcomed and were introduced to the team. We were told to select donated clothes to style and we practiced our runway walks. The amazing Miss Ireland International 2019, Blessing Mutamba, taught us how to model the clothes confidently and we went home to practice and get ready for the event night.

The Working Wardrobe event itself was  hosted by Jason Mohammad (Radio and Television presenter, BBC) who made the show really lively, as did everyone that worked so hard on the event. It is a great initiative and sustainable cause by founded by Rich Thomas and SamCooper-Woolley.

The whole experience was like nothing I had been involved with before; located at the Tramshed Tech, I loved styling the donated clothes and being able to wear the looks I had put together on the catwalk. I styled and modelled two outfits, walking the catwalk twice, and I was amazed at the support from the audience and the atmosphere was incredible! Taking part, meeting so many people, making more connections and making new friends really boosted my confidence. Seeing my Lecturers in the front of the audience cheering me on made me feel so happy supported and has motivated me to get out there and gain as much as experience as I can!

Volunteering within the industry has helped me meet professionals in the field, bettered my people skills and broadened my prospective by supporting such a wonderful cause and event Cardiff Met always opens many opportunities for students to experience and I feel very lucky to have taken part in the Working Wardrobe event.

Walking the catwalk at the event really built my confidence!
Volunteering at the ‘Working Wardrobe’ was a fantastic experience!
