How Interior Design at Cardiff Met helped me become an award winner

I began my first year of studies at Cardiff Met in 2019. The first months of studying Interior Design were filled with exciting workshops in model making and technical drawing, as well as sessions outside of my subject to broaden my skills. These included printmaking, bookbinding and stitch.

Personally, I thrive on exploring new creative processes, so this aspect was extremely fun for me. These workshops were very inspiring for my subject work, and allowed me to bring my own surface pattern designs into my interior design projects, adding another layer of creativity to my first-year projects.

Some of my level 4 work – I learned so much in first year!

Second year was more of a challenge as the pandemic forced everyone into online learning, which significantly reduced our access the amazing facilities in CSAD which I found so inspiring in first year. However, the lectures and course leaders of Interior Design worked hard to ensure we stayed motivated and collaborative modules allowed me to continue learning from other disciplines outside of my subject, despite being online.

The pandemic made things very different in second year, but our lecturers worked hard to keep us motivated

My motivation was significantly increased in second year when I was nominated by my course leader for the Women in Property Awards 2021. The Women in Property Awards is a national competition whereby universities can nominate a female undergraduate who exceeds in their discipline within the property industry. It was a privilege to be nominated for this as it opened a great opportunity for myself.

Due to the pandemic, the first round of interviews and the regional awards were virtual. For the interview I had to present my work to a panel of judges from the South Wales branch of Women in Property. A first, this seemed daunting however, my practice in presenting during my studies really helped. In fact, the presentation went very well, and I ended up winning the regional awards for South Wales.

Winning the award was a huge boost!

The judges commended me for “having understanding and knowledge way ahead of her years.  She is very passionate about materials and the built environment and has the ability to talk freely and openly from the heart.”.

This was an amazing achievement for myself and gave me the privilege to attend the “Best of Best” finals in London later that year. The national awards ceremony took place in Claridge’s, following another round of interviews for myself and the 12 other finalists. Although I did not win the national title, the event was a brilliant opportunity to connect and network with other students and specialists within the property industry. It was also a really fun night, with great food and inspirational speakers.

Overall, the whole experience increased my excitement to join the diverse and creative property industry upon graduating this year.

I am now completing my final year of studies at Cardiff Met. With my dissertation finished and my final project beginning, the end seems to be getting rather close. The professional practice module I am currently taking will ensure that I am ready to leave university and join the industry this year.

Overall, studying Interior Design at Cardiff Met has given me a foundation of skills in everything from CAD to model making, seen me participate in exciting industry experiences and allowed me to thrive in a creative community of both staff and students.
