Kelvin Kalungi

I’m Kelvin, a first year BA (Hons) International Tourism & Events Management and I applied to Cardiff Met through Clearing last year.

Going to university and studying away from home is a big commitment and can be intimidating. This made me a little anxious and I felt under pressure, as I would have to get used to a new environment very quickly.

Initially, I had accepted a place at the University of East London (UEL) on a Sports degree but I later realised this would not be right for me as although I love the practical side of sport I am not so interested in the theory. Therefore, I made the decision to have a gap year to figure out what I really wanted to do. However, I soon recognised that without significant plans for my gap year I might be happier going to a different university to study something other than sport.

I remembered hearing about Cardiff Met whilst at College during the UCAS application process. So although I had not attended any of the open days organised by the College, I was still aware of what Cardiff Met offered as a University.

I have truly enjoyed every moment of my first year at Cardiff Met…

The process of applying through Clearing itself was pretty simple. I had to request UEL to release me into Clearing as I was still holding a place there. As soon as UEL released me, I applied to Cardiff Met to study the BA (Hons) International Tourism & Events Management as I was interested in the tourism aspect of the course and I felt the events side of the course would add variety to my studies.

The entire process of applying through Clearing took a few days, during this time the team at Cardiff Met were supportive and informative. Cardiff Met also recommended accommodation with rooms still available a short walk from the Llandaff campus.

The city of Cardiff itself totally surprised me, there is so much to do and see that even after living in Cardiff for my first year at University, there are still places I am yet visit and things I want to experience.

Even though Cardiff Met, as well as Tourism and Events Management, weren’t options I’d initially considered I have truly enjoyed every moment of my first year from the long hours spent on assignments to the nights out with new friends.

I’m so grateful that Clearing gave me a second chance at choosing the right course, at the right University, for me!
