Coming to university is likely to make you feel excited, liberated, scared and plenty more emotions – but whatever feelings you’re experiencing, someone else is too.
You’re not alone and hopefully your first few weeks will be spent meeting new people, making friends and enjoying yourself before settling in to a routine. Once that initial period is over, it’s time to get down to business. However you think your time at university may pan out, my one piece of advice would be to make the most of every single opportunity.
When I came to Cardiff Met all I wanted to do was become sports scientist at a professional football club. Now, having been exposed to a host of different experiences, both my focus of study and future plans have changed – and that’s normal. University is about discovering not just your subject of study, but also yourself; you’ll find out what makes you tick and what will be your motivation to get out of bed to attack the day for the next however many years of employment.
One of the best ways to maximize your time and to come away with skills that will help to set you up for an exciting future is to get involved with the Students’ Union and there are so many ways to do it. Whether its joining a society, representing your fellow students, gaining valuable paid work experience in one of our venues or playing for a sports team (competitively or in one of our weekly social sport sessions), there is so much you can do. If you make the most of it you’ll not only have an amazing experience, you’ll also put yourself in the best possible position when you graduate.
The Students’ Union exists solely for your benefit, so make the most of it. The Freshers Fayre on Wednesday 20th September at Cyncoed and MetFest on Friday 22nd September at Llandaff are two big dates for your diary where you can get started. The Fayre is your chance to find out about the clubs and societies you want to join, meet your School Rep and pick up some freebies too. The MetFest will be a great event with street food, bands and acts, and there’ll be more activities around the university, including the School of Art and Design and School of Management and much more. Keep your eyes on our Fresher’s website for full line ups and announcements.
The easiest way to stay up to date with what’s going on at your SU is to follow our social accounts on Twitter (@CardiffMetSU), Facebook (Cardiff Met SU), Instagram (@cardiffmetsu) and Snapchat (cardiffmetsu). Get to know where the SU facilities are on both campuses, our Starbucks outlets, Zen, Centro and the shops and join us at some of the events that we host on both campuses.
I hope to meet as many new students as possible, so feel free to come and say hello at the Freshers Fayre or MetFest and throughout the year. I’ll be tweeting regularly (@willfuller1) to show you what’s going on at the SU and times and days when we’ll be hosting our ‘Tell US’ pop ups to get your ideas and feedback.
Work hard, make the most of all the opportunities that present themselves and I’m sure that you’ll have an amazing time at Cardiff Met… Good luck!
