On Monday the 19th of January, all level 6 Psychology students were invited to attend the 2023 Psychology research poster conference, in the lavish Insole Court. This was the first year back to presenting in a public space after Covid-19 had disrupted academic learning across the board. The aim of the conference was to discuss our research posters, with both academic staff and our peers.

During this day we were treated to health-related research talks from Cardiff Met’s very own Dr Rhiannon Phillips, talks from past students that gave us a helpful hints and tips on what to do next, and an opportunity to discuss future options available to us, not only through Cardiff Met but elsewhere. I found this day to be very beneficial, as it not only helped me gain confidence, but it encouraged me to think about the next steps I need to take in regards to my career.

Overcoming Fear

Hints & Tips:

The initial thought of the poster presentation was a daunting one, even though I had been given guidance from my personal tutor, and the module leader Dr Nick Perham. However, I found out that the majority of my peers felt the same, and with support and encouragement from each other we got through the day hiccup free. In fact the event as a whole was a really lovely experience that I’m sure we will refer back to for years to come. I found having the opportunity to engage with past students’ to be very beneficial. This gave us an insight of what steps to take next and an opportunity to hear more about the different career options available once we’ve completed the necessary steps.

Undergraduate to Postgraduate

Talks from Dr Heidi Seage & Leanne Watson were helpful, as they explained what Cardiff Met has to offer in regard to post graduate studies. Prior to the event I was unaware of the benefits attached to continuing my studies with Cardiff Met, such as discounted tuition fees. I feel that this information can really help with making those important decisions about your future.

  1. Remember, this is your project. You DO have all the answers.
  2. Talk to your peers, they will most likely be feeling the same as you, help and support one another.
  3. Prepare questions to ask, in relation to taking the next steps of your journey.
