Rhythm Jain on Work Placement at Nestle

My name is Rhythm Jain, I am from India and I am studying the MSc Food Science and Technology at Cardiff Metropolitan University. After researching UK universities, I decided on the course at Cardiff Met, as it felt like it was tailor made for me, and perfectly suited everything that I wanted to learn.

I have thoroughly enjoyed studying the course and I have had an amazing time. Not only in the sense of the academic elements of the course, but I have been able to experience university life and live it to the full! I was elected as the course representative, and even worked as an International Student Ambassador.

I have enjoyed all subjects that I have studied, but if I had to choose a favourite, it would be the New Product Development module that I studied during my second semester. We got to develop new products for a real company, which gave me hands-on experience, related to the Internships that I was applying for.

Through the course I have secured an internship with Nestle in Dubai, working as a new product development intern, which I am really excited about.

When looking for my internship I used LinkedIn to get in touch with the right people, that helped me to speak to the HR team at Nestle. This allowed me to get my CV to them. Once they had my CV I was invited to interview, and managed to get the position. The course team at the university are really helpful in helping you work on your CV – I’m so glad I took every opportunity for help and guidance.

I found it really useful using LinkedIn, and not just applying to online job adverts. It was important for me in securing my internship to have my profile out there, and to create my own identity. People won’t know what you are looking for unless you get in touch with them – so put yourself out there and be proactive!

Although I got my placement at a big company in the industry, it’s a good idea to get in touch with small and medium companies as well, as you’ll have more chance of finding somewhere that is the right fit for you.

I would recommend Cardiff Met to any International Student, it was my first choice! If you are looking for a brilliant course, along with a brilliant student life and university experience, I would thoroughly recommend it.
