One of the main contributing factors as to why I chose to study BA (Hons) Fashion Buying and Brand Management degree at Cardiff Met was because of the fantastic opportunity to complete a sandwich year placement. As I began my second year of study, I started trawling websites such as Fashion Workie, Fashion United and LinkedIn daily because I knew how beneficial a years’ worth of work experience would be to me on both a personal and academic level and for my future career. By doing this I landed on my dream placement as Buying Assistant Intern at The Very Group!

Each and every application process varied in structure depending on which brands I applied to; which was probably more than twenty!. However, I always tailored my CV towards the brand and always spent time curating a cover letter that would grab the recruiter’s attention. Furthermore, my CVs and cover letters were always creative and showed my personality. Some application processes were stressful; however, I cannot speak highly enough of my recruitment experience at The Very Group.

Firstly, I saw the job advertised and applied with a CV and cover letter. Shortly after I was asked to send in a SWOT analysis of the brand.  I was then invited to the interview stage where I presented my SWOT analysis to two Head Buyers and answered some interview questions. Having the chance to present my SWOT analysis and answer further questions on it in my interview showcased my knowledge, excitement and interest for not only the role but the industry as a whole. And I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to do this.

I am currently  Buying Assistant Intern on The Very Group’s own-brand department within the Casual Woven and Outerwear team. Due to the pandemic, The Very Group are operating on a hybrid working model. Meaning, I have the pleasure of physically going into the office and getting a true feel for the role. When in the office I tend to be more hands-on with product in the form of production samples, helping to rack up ranges, fittings and posting samples. Furthermore, I curate new in reports, trade reports, competitor pricing analysis reports and many other general admin tasks to support my team. Despite the challenges of beginning a new role during Covid-19, my team could not be anymore understanding, helpful and generally amazing at welcoming me.

Although I am only eight weeks in to my placement as I write this, I have already learned invaluable skills and knowledge that I know will help me going into my third year of study at Cardiff Met and beyond. I have learnt that a Buyers day-to-day role varies hugely depending on the current time of the season, that rarely any working day is the same and how important it is to know your product and your consumer. Some skills that I will take away with me are to always be organised, punctual, prioritise and try to be one step ahead!

I’m currently having the best time on my sandwich year placement and would without a doubt encourage all students to seek work experience, as what you will learn will help positively guide you in your future career.
